What Is 3D Archery? A Beginner’s Guide to Walk-Through Courses
3D archery is shooting at life-size foam animal targets set along a walking trail. Instead of standing at one line and shooting at paper or bales, you move from station to station, and every shot is different: a deer quartering away at 30 yards, a turkey in the shade at 18, a hog down in a draw.
It’s the closest thing to bowhunting you can do year-round, and it’s one of the friendliest ways to get into archery.
How a 3D course works
A 3D course is laid out a bit like a golf course. Each target is a “station.” At each station you shoot from a marked stake, walk up, score your arrow, pull it, and move on to the next target.
Most courses use one arrow per target. That single shot is the point: in the field you rarely get a second one, so 3D trains you to make the first arrow count.
What makes it different from target archery
- Distances change. On most 3D courses, targets sit at different yardages, and you often have to judge the distance yourself.
- Terrain changes. You’ll shoot uphill, downhill, across a slope, through a gap in the trees.
- The target looks like an animal. You’re aiming at a vital zone on a deer or hog, not a bullseye on a white face.
- You keep moving. A full course is a walk outdoors, not a session standing at the line.
How scoring works
3D targets have scoring rings over the vital area, usually a small center ring, a larger ring around it, and the body outside that. Hitting closer to the heart-and-lung zone scores more. Different organizations use slightly different point values, but the principle is the same: the shot that would cleanly take an animal scores best.
You don’t have to keep score to enjoy 3D. Plenty of archers just walk the course with friends and talk about each shot.
What you need to start
- A bow you can draw comfortably for a full course
- Arrows with field points (no broadheads on 3D targets)
- Comfortable shoes for walking
- Water, especially in Texas
You don’t need to be an expert. If you can safely shoot a bow at a bale, you can shoot a 3D course.
Tips for your first round
- Take your time at each stake. There’s no rush.
- Guess the yardage before you shoot, then check it as you walk up. Your eye gets better fast.
- Aim small. Pick a spot in the vital zone, not “the deer.”
- Shoot one arrow per target the way a hunter would.
- Bring a friend. 3D is better in a group.
Shoot it at The Bow Yard
The Bow Yard is a 300-acre 3D archery range at 3607 Old Maypearl Road in Waxahachie, TX. The Red Course has 10 targets, the Blue Course has 12, and the static range runs out to 100 yards. Open 9 am to 5 pm, seven days a week. A day pass is $40 per person.
